The OSU Alumni Club of West Michigan will, for the third year, join the First Year OSU Students and the OSU campus community, by participating in
Buckeye Book Community!
Please contact our Chairperson, Kristy Kieda at KristyKieda@gmail.com to reserve your FREE copy of the book described below.
Each summer all first year OSU students complete their first college assignment by participating in the Buckeye Book Community (BBC). First year students are given a selected book during orientation. They are asked to read the book before they return to campus and be prepared to discuss and analyze what they have read. The experience culminates with a visit from the featured author and many programs and events that incorporate the book and its themes in the fall semester. The BBC connects the first year class through a shared experience and introduces the expectation that college students cultivate a life of learning both in and outside the classroom. Upper class students, staff and faculty are also encouraged to read the book, and we want to share this opportunity with alumni, as part of our Buckeye Community as well!
The book for the 2016-2017 year is The Other Wes Moore. Two kids named Wes Moore were born blocks apart within a year of each other. Both grew up fatherless in similar Baltimore neighborhoods and had difficult childhoods; both hung out on street corners with their crews; both ran into trouble with the police. How, then, did one grow up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader, while the other ended a convicted murderer serving a life sentence? Wes Moore, the author of this fascinating book, sets out to answer this profound question. In alternating narratives that take readers from heart-wrenching losses to moments of surprising redemption, The Other Wes Moore tells the story of a generation of boys trying to find their way in a hostile world.
Our Alumni Club will, for the third year, once again participate in this endeavor. We will be provided up to 15 copies of The Other Wes Moore. We will be able to distribute these books after August 23 and will do a group discussion (possibly through Google Hangout) in the coming months. We may also be able to provide those that are interested, tickets to attend the author’s lecture on OSU’s campus or a link to watch the live-stream of the author’s visit on October 4th.
Our Club’s Chair for the Buckeye Book Community will be Kristy Kieda. Please contact her ASAP to make arrangements to receive or mail your book!
